House Painting - Top 5 Painting Techniques Used By Professionals

Using a roller to paint walls and ceilings will help you finish your painting job in less than half the time it would take it you used a hand-held brush. While this technique does cut time, it also requires some special knowledge so you get the smooth, even results you want when you look at the dried paint. Here are a few tips to get professional results using any good quality hand-held or power roller. you may check this company Pro Painters Brisbane.

The following are professional painting techniques

1. The Use of Rollers

The trick with hand-held rollers is to load the roller with the proper amount of paint. The trick will power rollers is adjusting the flow of the paint and keeping the roller moving all the time that the paint is flowing.

Having the paint flow without the roller rolling makes for quite a mess. Most painters like to release paint for power rollers in short spurts instead of a heavy stream. Then they apply the standard techniques used for both hand-held and power rollers to spread the paint properly.

How to Hold and Load a Roller

Open your palm and put the roller handle so it lies across the bottom of your index finger, angled slightly away from your fingers. Close your hand, putting your thumb either on the roller handle or to the side.

To load the roller, dip it in paint and then roll it back and forth until it is absorbed throughout the material that makes up the roller sleeve. If the paint drips off the roller, there is too much. Use a roller screen to squeeze just enough paint off the roller to keep it from dripping.

A good roller cover, or sleeve, should can made of synthetic or natural fibers if you are using oil-based paint, and made from synthetic material if you are using water-based or latex paint. Do not get cheap roller covers or the paint job will look poor when you're done. Pick covers with dense fibers, and choose covers with fiber lengths based on how rough the surface you are painting is. The rougher the surface is the longer the fiber lengths in the roller can be.

Applying the Paint

Roll the paint on in a big "W" or zigzag pattern about three feet wide. Then, without reloading the roller, make horizontal strokes back and forth to evenly spread the paint. Finally, feather the edges by using vertical strokes along corners. You want to be working with the wet edge as you spread the paint, gently reducing the pressure you put on the roller at the top and bottom of each section.

2. Rag Painting Technique

With the rag painting technique, no paint brushes or rollers are used. Instead simple rags such as old t-shirts or any type of cotton rag are used to apply the paint to the wall. This creates a marbled effect on the wall. To rag paint:

  • Dip the rag into the container of paint and shake off the excess.
  • Dab the rag onto the wall, applying the paint in whatever pattern that you choose, but be sure to not spread out the pattern too much.
  • For a more creative touch, you can apply a darker base color and then rag on a lighter paint color.

3. Sponge Painting Technique

Sponge painting or sponging is a painting technique that is used to give a wall a depth and interest. You will need to apply a base color to the wall before you can sponge paint it. To sponge paint:

  • Dip a regular sponge or sea sponge into the paint or glaze of your choice.
  • Start from the outside of one of the walls and dab the sponge in a random pattern.
  • Complete all the walls in the room this way, or you can choose to do only one wall in the room with the sponge painting technique.

4. Color Washing Technique

Color washing is a painting technique that adds a subtle finish to the walls that gives the appearance of floating color. It is a good technique if you have a wall that has several flaws that you want to hide. It can take a little more time than other painting techniques as you must build up layers to get the full effect. To apply the color washing technique:

  • Paint the wall the color that you want to be your base color and then wait for it to dry completely.
  • Then come back and paint another layer using a slightly different color or a complimentary color.
  • When painting this layer use a paint brush only and apply the paint in all different directions, going over your strokes so that the base color shows through in random areas.
  • You can do more than one layer of painting this way if you want another color to show on the walls as well

5. Faux painting

Faux painting techniques vary from using plaster, glaze, different paint colors, and texture tricks to achieve a certain look to a room or piece of furniture. For the sake of brevity, below are the most popular looks to achieve with faux painting techniques - this is not a how-to, but it does open up options to giving the home a whole new look.
